Reiki, a powerful form of energy healing, has touched the lives of many by offering physical, emotional, and spiritual healing. And as Reiki has grown in popularity, numerous lineages and types of Reiki have emerged, each with unique approaches and teachings. For anyone interested in Reiki, understanding these different forms can be helpful, whether you're seeking healing or looking to train as a practitioner.
In this blog post, we’ll explore the most recognized types of Reiki, their history, how they differ, and how to choose the best one for your healing journey.
Traditional Usui Reiki
The most widely known form of Reiki is Usui Reiki, named after its founder, Mikao Usui, who established the system in the early 20th century in Japan. Usui Reiki focuses on the laying on of hands and the transmission of Universal life energy to the client. Practitioners serve as channels for this energy, which helps to restore balance and promote healing on all levels: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.
Usui Shiki Ryoho
Usui Shiki Ryoho, was brought to the West by Hawayo Takata, a Japanese-American woman who learned Reiki in Japan and then spread its teachings in the United States in the mid-1900s. This is the most well-known and practiced form of Reiki in the West today.
Usui Shiki Ryoho, follows a structured system that includes three levels of training - Reiki I, II, and Master/Teacher - focusing on hands-on healing, distant healing, and attunements. The three levels or degrees are as follows:
First Degree: Practitioners are taught hand positions and basic techniques for self-healing and healing others.
Second Degree: Focuses on the use of sacred symbols and distance healing techniques.
Third Degree: Reiki Master/Teacher level, where one learns advanced healing techniques and, if desired, how to attune others to Reiki.
This lineage emphasizes simplicity, standardized hand positions, and personal empowerment through Reiki practice. Usui Shiki Ryoho is widely taught and practiced worldwide, making Reiki accessible to a broad audience while maintaining its spiritual essence and healing potential.
Usui Reiki Ryoho
Usui Reiki Ryoho is the traditional Japanese system of Reiki as taught by Mikao Usui. It emphasizes spiritual development, self-healing, and direct experience with energy through meditation and hands-on techniques. This practice focuses on cultivating inner harmony, clearing energetic blockages, and deepening one’s connection to the universal life force.
Rooted in Japanese esoteric practices, Usui Reiki Ryoho incorporates techniques like Reiji-ho (intuitive healing), Byosen scanning (energy assessment), and the use of Reiki precepts for daily living. In this tradition, there is a strong emphasis on the five Reiki principles (read more here), as a means of spiritual growth.
It is a holistic approach to healing, emphasizing both physical and spiritual well-being. Practitioners are encouraged to develop mindfulness and meditate regularly to enhance their healing abilities.
Violet Flame Reiki
Violet Flame Reiki is a beautiful and transformative energy healing system channeled by Ivy Moore from Quan Yin, the Goddess of Compassion. Unlike Usui Reiki, which carries a more structured and masculine energy, Violet Flame Reiki embodies the gentle, nurturing, and deeply healing essence of the Divine Feminine.
This energy works with the Violet Flame, a spiritual force known for clearing negativity, releasing karma, and raising your vibration. The Violet Flame transmutes lower energies into light, making it a powerful tool for personal and spiritual transformation. Violet Flame Reiki is a high-vibrational energy healing modality that combines the transformative power of the Violet Flame with traditional Reiki.
The Violet Flame is known in spiritual traditions as a purifying and transmuting energy that clears negative energy, karmic patterns, and emotional blockages. Violet Flame Reiki works by channeling this sacred energy through symbols and intention, helping practitioners and recipients release lower vibrational energies and elevate their spiritual awareness. It is particularly effective for deep healing, forgiveness work, and enhancing personal transformation. This system can be used on its own or integrated with Usui Reiki to amplify healing effects.

Holy Fire® Reiki
Holy Fire® Reiki was developed by William Lee Rand, the founder of the International Center for Reiki Training. This modern adaptation of Reiki is described as being more refined and offering a stronger connection to higher levels of spiritual consciousness. Holy Fire® Reiki is considered both powerful and gentle, providing deep healing, purification, and empowerment.
Holy Fire® Reiki emphasizes the use of meditations, which are designed to connect the practitioner with their higher self and the spiritual source of healing energy. It also focuses on the release of past trauma and negative energy patterns, allowing for profound transformation.
One of the significant differences between Holy Fire® Reiki and traditional Usui Reiki is the way attunements (the process of transferring Reiki ability from master to student) are given. Holy Fire® uses "ignitions" rather than traditional attunements, which are said to be directly guided by the Holy Fire energy.
Karuna Reiki®
Karuna Reiki® is another form developed by William Lee Rand. This system evolved from Usui Reiki and incorporates additional healing frequencies and symbols that are unique to this practice.
The word “Karuna” translates to “compassion” in Sanskrit, and Karuna Reiki® aims to awaken compassion in both the practitioner and the recipient. It is often described as a higher vibrational form of Reiki, focusing on deep emotional healing and trauma release.
Karuna Reiki® also uses chanting and toning to enhance healing and is considered to work on a deeper, more cellular level compared to traditional Usui Reiki. Karuna practitioners must already be Reiki Masters, as it is considered an advanced form of Reiki.
Tibetan Reiki
Tibetan Reiki is a variation of Reiki that incorporates ancient Tibetan symbols and practices along with the traditional Usui Reiki techniques. Tibetan Reiki is deeply rooted in the spiritual traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, and its focus is on achieving harmony between the body, mind, and spirit.
Tibetan Reiki often includes the use of powerful symbols that originate from Tibetan spiritual teachings. These symbols are used to unlock deeper healing potentials, focusing not just on physical ailments but also on karmic and spiritual imbalances.
Tibetan Reiki practitioners may also use sound healing techniques, such as the chanting of mantras or the use of Tibetan singing bowls, during sessions. This combination of energy work, sound, and spirituality makes Tibetan Reiki a powerful modality for those seeking not only healing but also enlightenment and spiritual liberation.
Jikiden Reiki
Jikiden Reiki is a more traditional form of Reiki that focuses on preserving the original Japanese teachings of Mikao Usui and Chujiro Hayashi. It was introduced to the world by Tadao Yamaguchi, whose mother, Chiyoko Yamaguchi, was trained by Hayashi.
Jikiden Reiki emphasizes hands-on healing and the use of the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It does not incorporate some of the Western adaptations that are common in Usui Shiki Ryoho, such as the chakra system or distant healing through visualization techniques. Instead, it remains close to the original teachings, focusing on physical healing and detoxification of the body.
Reiki Tummo®
Reiki Tummo® combines traditional Reiki with the ancient Tibetan technique of Tummo, a practice aimed at awakening the Kundalini energy within the body. The focus of Reiki Tummo® is on healing and spiritual awakening. Practitioners of this system work with both Universal energy and the inner energy of the Kundalini to promote healing and facilitate spiritual growth.
This system is known for its focus on heart-centered healing, and practitioners often describe profound experiences of love and compassion as part of their training. It is believed that Reiki Tummo® can accelerate spiritual development, helping practitioners move toward higher states of consciousness more rapidly.
Gendai Reiki Ho
Gendai Reiki Ho, founded by Hiroshi Doi, blends traditional Japanese Reiki teachings with modern Reiki practices from the West. The intention behind Gendai Reiki Ho is to create a balanced practice that emphasizes both the healing and spiritual development aspects of Reiki.
The system incorporates some modern Reiki techniques, such as using Reiki for stress reduction and relaxation, while staying true to the original Japanese roots of Reiki. Gendai Reiki Ho is widely practiced in Japan and is seen as a bridge between Eastern and Western Reiki traditions.
Seichim or Sekhem Reiki
Seichim or Sekhem is a form of energy healing that is closely related to Reiki but draws its energy from a different source. Seichim (also spelled Sekhem) is believed to be derived from ancient Egyptian healing practices. It is said to channel the energy of Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of healing and transformation.
Seichim Reiki is often described as more feminine in its energy compared to Usui Reiki. Practitioners work with both Reiki energy and Seichim energy, blending the two to create a more holistic healing experience.
Crystal Reiki
Crystal Reiki integrates the principles of traditional Reiki with the vibrational energy of crystals. In Crystal Reiki, practitioners use specific crystals during healing sessions to amplify the energy flow, enhance healing, and target specific physical, emotional, or spiritual issues.
Crystals, each with their unique properties, are placed on or around the client's body in alignment with the chakras or specific points of tension or imbalance. These crystals help direct the Reiki energy more precisely, combining their natural frequencies with the Universal energy of Reiki.
Crystal Reiki is a beautiful combination of ancient crystal wisdom with the gentle, healing flow of Reiki energy, making it popular with those who are drawn to the metaphysical properties of stones and crystals.
Rainbow Reiki
Rainbow Reiki is a modern Reiki system developed by Walter Lübeck, which expands upon traditional Usui Reiki by incorporating additional esoteric and spiritual practices. Rainbow Reiki introduces advanced healing techniques, including energy clearing, chakra balancing, and aura harmonizing. It also involves working with the energy frequencies of the seven rays, which correspond to different aspects of human consciousness and spiritual development.
Rainbow Reiki practitioners work with these rays or energy vibrations to create a more holistic healing experience, often focusing on balancing all aspects of the energy body, including the chakras, meridians, and aura.
This form of Reiki places a strong emphasis on spiritual growth and personal development, helping both the practitioner and the client reach higher levels of awareness and healing. It’s known for being an intensive healing method that helps with deep-rooted issues, emotional blockages, and spiritual alignment.

How to Choose the Best Reiki Lineage or Type for You
With so many different types of Reiki available, choosing the right one for your personal healing or practitioner journey can feel overwhelming. However, there are several key factors to consider that can help you make an informed and intuitive decision. Here are some tips to guide you in selecting the best Reiki lineage or type for your unique path:
1. Understand Your Goals
Ask yourself what you are hoping to achieve through Reiki. Are you seeking personal healing, spiritual growth, or both? Do you want to deepen your energy healing knowledge and become a practitioner or teacher?
If you are focused on physical healing or balancing energy in everyday life, traditional Usui Reiki or Jikiden Reiki may be suitable, as they focus on straightforward techniques and foundational energy work.
For those who want to work on emotional healing or trauma, Karuna Reiki®, which emphasizes compassion and deeper emotional layers, might resonate more.
If your goal is spiritual growth and transformation, Reiki systems like Tibetan Reiki or Reiki Tummo® that focus on Kundalini energy and enlightenment could offer what you need.
2. Connect with Your Intuition
Reiki is an energy-based practice, and it often helps to use your own energy and intuition to decide which type or lineage calls to you. Take some time to meditate, focus on your intentions, and ask yourself what resonates on an intuitive level.
Holy Fire® Reiki, for instance, is described as being guided by higher consciousness and spiritual energy, which might appeal to those who want a connection to their higher self or a divine source of healing.
Crystal Reiki may call to you if you feel naturally drawn to working with crystals or feel a deep connection to the earth’s energies.
3. Explore the Techniques and Tools Used
Different types of Reiki incorporate various tools, symbols, and techniques that can influence your decision:
Crystal Reiki involves the use of crystals to amplify healing, which can be appealing if you enjoy working with stones and their metaphysical properties.
Rainbow Reiki works with the energy of the seven rays and includes esoteric practices such as aura clearing and chakra balancing.
Tibetan Reiki may incorporate Tibetan spiritual symbols and sound healing tools like singing bowls, which could appeal if you have a strong connection to sound or mantras.
Choosing a Reiki type that uses techniques and tools you are excited to work with can make your practice more fulfilling.
4. Consider the Lineage’s Spiritual Focus
Different Reiki types place varying levels of emphasis on spiritual development. Some are more focused on healing the physical body and emotions, while others center around deep spiritual awakening and self-realization.
If you’re looking for a lineage that emphasizes spiritual growth, systems like Reiki Tummo®, Holy Fire® Reiki, and Tibetan Reiki may be ideal as they incorporate spiritual teachings and higher consciousness work.
On the other hand, if you want a practice that is more healing-focused and less about spiritual enlightenment, Usui Reiki, Jikiden Reiki, or Gendai Reiki Ho may provide exactly what you need.
5. Research and Talk to Practitioners or Teachers
Another great way to choose the right Reiki lineage is to speak with experienced Reiki practitioners or teachers from different traditions. Ask about their experiences and what they feel are the benefits and focuses of their particular lineage.
Some teachers may offer sample Reiki sessions, which will allow you to experience the energy firsthand and see if it aligns with your needs.
Many schools and Reiki communities offer introductory classes or workshops, which can give you a better understanding of what to expect from each lineage or type of Reiki.
6. Follow What Resonates with You
At the end of the day, choosing a Reiki lineage is a deeply personal decision. While it's helpful to do research and gather information, the most important factor is how you feel. Does one lineage or type stand out to you? Does it excite or inspire you?
Rainbow Reiki may appeal to someone who feels a deep connection to holistic, multi-dimensional healing.
Seichim or Sekhem Reiki might resonate with those who feel drawn to ancient Egyptian wisdom and goddesses like Sekhmet.
Ultimately, the best Reiki lineage for you is the one that speaks to your heart and soul, aligns with your goals, and feels right to your energy.
7. Experiment and Explore
If you’re unsure, you don’t have to choose just one type of Reiki. Many practitioners learn more than one form of Reiki throughout their spiritual journey. You can start with one lineage, like Usui Reiki, to build a strong foundation, and later expand into more specialized systems like Karuna Reiki® or Crystal Reiki.
Each Reiki system can complement the other, and as you deepen your practice, you may find that blending different forms of Reiki enhances your healing abilities and spiritual growth.
Conclusion
With the growing number of Reiki types and lineages, there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The key to choosing the best Reiki for you is to listen to your heart, understand your healing or spiritual goals, and trust your intuition. Whether you resonate with the simplicity of traditional Usui Reiki, the transformative power of Karuna or Tibetan Reiki, or the earth-based amplification of Crystal Reiki, the most important factor is finding a lineage that aligns with your unique path.
Your Reiki journey is an ongoing process of exploration and growth, so allow yourself the space to learn, evolve, and choose what feels right for you at each stage of your spiritual development.
